First order: "Continue to march!". General Joseph Dunford, 58, became Commandant of the Marine Corps at Marine Barracks in Washington D.C. Friday morning with V.I.P.s  Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and close friend General John Kelly in attendance. In honor were Commandant Dunford’s wife, Ellyn, and children, Joseph Jr., Patrick, and Kathleen.

General Amos also received a citation and letter of gratitude for his 44 years of service to the Nation from President Obama. The First Lady of the Corps Mrs. Bonnie Amos also received a Distinguished Service Medal for her tireless work on behalf of all Marines over many years of service.

General and Mrs. Amos have been great friends and supporters of the Marine Corps League for many years and will be missed.  We wish them “fair winds and following seas” as they move to the next chapter of their lives.

General and Mrs. Dunford have always been great supporters and we look forward to working closely with them as the Corps and the League move forward.

VA Takes Next Step to Modernize Scheduling System

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced plans to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new Medical Appointment Scheduling System; the next step in a series of actions VA has taken to replace its antiquated legacy scheduling system.  The new system will improve access to care for Veterans by providing medical schedulers with cutting-edge, management-based scheduling software.  The RFP will be made public by the end of September 2014; eligible vendors will have 30 days to respond from the day of issuance.

As you read this column, many departments are concluding their annual department conventions. Some of those departments will see an influx of newly elected and appointed officers. Those officers will be responsible for leading their members for at least the next 12 months. I hope these Marines have reviewed all of the modules of the Professional Development Program (PDP), especially the one titled “Leadership Principles.”
Since many of you are going to be in the forefront of working with members to keep the department on a steadfast course, you need to have a good knowledge of the Marine Corps League and the duties of the Board of Trustees. It's also important to conduct meetings in a manner that ensures your audience is getting your message loud and clear.

Aside from the current events in Iraq and the potential issues that raises, nothing has rocked our world more than the problems that have recently come to light with the Veterans Administration and more specifically the VA healthcare system. Rather than rehashing the details that have been in the national news, I thought it most Important to share with you what the Marine Corps League is doing and the position we have taken.
On 17 June, we joined with many of our sister Veterans Service Organizations and signed the following letter that was delivered to both the House and Senate Committees on Veterans Affairs, specifically Chairman Bernie Sanders, Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; Chairman Jeff Miller, Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; Ranking Member Richard Burr, Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; and Ranking Member Mike Michaud, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

Memorial Day: From the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Printer friendly page | Send this story to a friend

Memorial Day is our most solemn national holiday. It is a unique time for both celebration and poignant remembrances. We celebrate our freedom and way of life through backyard barbeques, ballgames, and beach outings. But, we also pause to remember our Fallen in ceremonies mourning the loss of those who gave their lives so that we might live ours in peace and freedom.  At its core, the eloquence of Memorial Day speaks of personal sacrifice for a greater, common good. It resonates in the stories of ordinary Americans, who fought and died, drawing on extraordinary inner strength and determination to preserve our Nation. They did so out of an abiding sense of duty and immense personal courage.

After 38 years in The Army, I am now honored and privileged to serve as your Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA).  VA remains committed to providing the high quality benefits you have earned and deserve.
Allegations of VA employees’ misconduct have surfaced over the last several weeks, beginning with scheduling delays at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. As I testified before Congress on May 15, I take any allegations about patient safety or employee misconduct very seriously.

Universal Headwear - False Rumors Printer friendly page | Send this story to a friend

FROM:  Headquarters Marine Corps, Public Affairs
ISSUE:  Uniform Board #213 (Universal Headwear) Media Reporting

BACKGROUND: DoD (DoN) charged the Corps (and other services) with looking into universal headwear.  Last week, the uniform board sent out a survey, through the chain of command, that sought the opinion of Marines on universal covers, multiple braids for females and Supplemental Allowance Changes.  Someone leaked/provided the survey to the NY post and the post subsequently queried our press section yesterday afternoon on the universal cover.  Upon consulting with the uniform board, we provided the following
answer:
"There is currently an ongoing survey underway asking Marines about their preferences on which type of cover they prefer. The results of the survey will assist the uniform board in making the final decision."  This morning a sensational story tying the decision directly to the POTUS ran in the NY Post (attached).  Other outlets like Fox News and Vanity Fair reported that the Marine Corps is changing the cover and that it may cost $8 million.  I
notified Fox of the facts to correct the record.   On our twitter handles,
we reiterated that the project was in the examination stages and being considered.  Also notified OSD PA of our actions.

DISCUSSION: Media interest in this topic is much higher than anticipated.
Because it involves conflict, prominence, sex, oddity, and suspense - it sells advertising. Many media outlets are simply reporting the NY Post story while others are asking DivPA for additional information. This issue has taken a political tone as the Post reported that President Obama was somehow the root cause of the change. We continue to press with the following statement in subsequent queries:  "The Marine Corps conducts, on average, quarterly assessments of uniform standards and provides their recommendations to the commandant of the Marine Corps for final approval.
The aim of the Marine Corps Uniform Board is to balance the individual Marine's need for 'best value' clothing in terms of practicality, quality and cost within realistic supply, support and fiscal constraints to ensure the Marine Corps maintains functional, traditional and distinctive uniforms.
We are currently assessing the utility of a universal cover that men and women Marines can wear. Personal opinion surveys for active duty and reserve Marines are in progress and we expect a decision to be made next month."

RECOMMENDATION: Aggressively disseminate 3 key facts:

1. The President in no way, shape or form directed the Marine Corps to change our uniform cover.

2. We are looking for a new cover for our female Marines for one overriding reason:  the former manufacturer went out of business.

3. The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover.

Please disseminate information as widely as possible.

On October 23, 1983, terrorists bombed the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 250 service members—220 of them Marines. This event marked one of the deadliest days in the Marine Corps’ long history. In response to this tragedy, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation took swift action, providing 102 treasury note certificates of $10,000 each to the children of all fallen service members that day, no matter their parent’s branch of service. This investment, worth over $1,500,000 today, helped many of them secure a brighter future for their families through education.
