Good Morning from a very chilly South Carolina where it seems Winter came in for one night.
The past two months were very busy visiting Marines and getting ready for the 239th Marine Corps Birthday, November 10th, which was followed by the Veteran's Day Ceremony, November 11th.

Let me begin by saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARINES”!  Yes, it is that time of the year again and every year, we receive questions about the proper apparel to wear to Marine Corps Birthday Balls and other formal occasions.  We never mind answering those questions.

America’s Military and Veterans have had no better friend, no stronger ally than Secretary Hagel.  The past two years have brought an openness and transparency to the Department of Defense not often seen in Washington.  Secretary Hagel has chaired at least six round-table discussions with more than twenty of the Nation’s largest Military and Veterans organizations.  He encouraged dialogue and exchange of views between his most senior staff and the VSO/MSO community.  He encouraged questions and suggestions. If he didn’t have a ready response, he would make notes and respond at a later time.  He engaged the Joint Chiefs in our discussions so that they too could hear and address the concerns of the active duty and veteran community.

The 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps accepted the Battle Colors of the Corps in the Passage of Command Ceremony at 8th & I on Friday - October 17th, 2014.
First order: "Continue to march!". General Joseph Dunford, 58, became Commandant of the Marine Corps at Marine Barracks in Washington D.C. Friday morning with V.I.P.s  Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and close friend General John Kelly in attendance. In honor were Commandant Dunford’s wife, Ellyn, and children, Joseph Jr., Patrick, and Kathleen.

General Amos also received a citation and letter of gratitude for his 44 years of service to the Nation from President Obama. The First Lady of the Corps Mrs. Bonnie Amos also received a Distinguished Service Medal for her tireless work on behalf of all Marines over many years of service.

General and Mrs. Amos have been great friends and supporters of the Marine Corps League for many years and will be missed.  We wish them “fair winds and following seas” as they move to the next chapter of their lives.

General and Mrs. Dunford have always been great supporters and we look forward to working closely with them as the Corps and the League move forward.

As you read this column, many departments are concluding their annual department conventions. Some of those departments will see an influx of newly elected and appointed officers. Those officers will be responsible for leading their members for at least the next 12 months. I hope these Marines have reviewed all of the modules of the Professional Development Program (PDP), especially the one titled “Leadership Principles.”
Since many of you are going to be in the forefront of working with members to keep the department on a steadfast course, you need to have a good knowledge of the Marine Corps League and the duties of the Board of Trustees. It's also important to conduct meetings in a manner that ensures your audience is getting your message loud and clear.

Aside from the current events in Iraq and the potential issues that raises, nothing has rocked our world more than the problems that have recently come to light with the Veterans Administration and more specifically the VA healthcare system. Rather than rehashing the details that have been in the national news, I thought it most Important to share with you what the Marine Corps League is doing and the position we have taken.
On 17 June, we joined with many of our sister Veterans Service Organizations and signed the following letter that was delivered to both the House and Senate Committees on Veterans Affairs, specifically Chairman Bernie Sanders, Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; Chairman Jeff Miller, Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; Ranking Member Richard Burr, Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; and Ranking Member Mike Michaud, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

In my last column, I spoke about opportunities to recruit new members. In January, a contingency of us headed out to Camp Pendleton to attend the Marine West Military Expo.  Marine Corps League and Auxiliary members from several states worked together assembling and passing out hundreds of bags with the Marine Corps League logo containing a mug and a copy of our latest Semper Fi magazine to everyone attending the show. Inside the show tent, Marines staffed a recruiting table informing the active duty Marines and Sailors as to what the Marine Corps League is, what we do and how we support our active duty Marine Corps and our community. These active duty Marines and FMF Corpsman were offered a free Honorary Membership for six months along with three issues of our Semper Fi magazine. If they like what they see and read about our league they have the opportunity to become new members, if they desire, they can be transferred to a detachment of their choice.  The National Jr. Vice Commandant oversees this program that has now been in place for several years and has proved successful. Just one more way of reaching out to Marines letting them know who we are, the many programs we have and as league members, the great camaderie we enjoy.

About a month after our National Convention last August, we had another round-table meeting with the Secretary of Defense.  We were privileged to receive top-level briefings from several of the Deputy Secretaries and Assistant Deputy Secretaries in the Department of Defense and they fielded every question that the Veterans Service Organization representatives threw at them.  Secretary Hagel spent over an hour with the group and shared a lot of information about his vision of the way forward and his plans and concerns.  He certainly appears to be a man driven to make good things happen in the Department and his chief concern is taking care of the troops.

Welcome to another great issue of our Semper Fi magazine. As I travel across the country visiting many of our Departments and Detachments, I receive many accolades about the magazine and the great variety of content that is published in it. Thanks to our National Executive Director/Editor Mike Blum and Bill Hudgins of Hammock Publishing for the fine job that they do for everyone that receives this publication.

As Marine Corps League members, family and friends, come together  to celebrate the 238th Birthday of our beloved Corps. Let’s pause for a moment to reflect back on our history since 1775. Hundreds of thousands of Marines that came before us earned that title and wear the Eagle Globe and Anchor embedded in their heart, from the day they first earned the title of “United States Marine” . Where we have been and what we have done as Marines is evident by The official Battle colors of the Marine Corps that display some fifty streamers .These streamers represent both U.S. and foreign awards as well as those periods of service, expeditions and campaigns that the Marine Corps has participated in from the Revolutionary War to the present.

In addition, there were also some six pilot teams that participated.

Rather than follow a theme as I attempt to do with most of my articles, in this article I will touch on several different subjects that I believe will be of interest to our members.

First and foremost, I wanted to share with you that I just got off the phone with Past National Commandant Vic Voltaggio who is home recovering from a major heart attack and triple bypass surgery. Vic sounded good and is just starting to regain his strength after a week in the hospital. Nurse Jan has been by his side constantly, and he referred to her as “his angel.”

As I begin this column for our next issue of Semper Fi, I look back on the many events that have transpired since our National Midwinter Conference, including a deeply moving trip to Iwo Jima. Upon the completion of the Conference, we headed out to Camp Pendleton for some warm weather and Marine West, which this year was held at Camp Del Mar, right on the beach.
It would be an exaggeration to say it was cool. The temperature in the early morning hours, up until about 1030 hovered in the 30's—not warm California weather by a long shot. However, the Expo was successful again, and we signed up some Marines as members.

Quite often I get questions about how we interact with the government here in Washington and on the National level. On 21–22 March, I had the opportunity to represent the Marine Corps League, joining with the leadership of several other veteran service and military service and support organizations at a two-day conference with the new Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and D-o-D senior executives in the Pentagon.
