In my last column, I spoke about opportunities to recruit new members. In January, a contingency of us headed out to Camp Pendleton to attend the Marine West Military Expo.  Marine Corps League and Auxiliary members from several states worked together assembling and passing out hundreds of bags with the Marine Corps League logo containing a mug and a copy of our latest Semper Fi magazine to everyone attending the show. Inside the show tent, Marines staffed a recruiting table informing the active duty Marines and Sailors as to what the Marine Corps League is, what we do and how we support our active duty Marine Corps and our community. These active duty Marines and FMF Corpsman were offered a free Honorary Membership for six months along with three issues of our Semper Fi magazine. If they like what they see and read about our league they have the opportunity to become new members, if they desire, they can be transferred to a detachment of their choice.  The National Jr. Vice Commandant oversees this program that has now been in place for several years and has proved successful. Just one more way of reaching out to Marines letting them know who we are, the many programs we have and as league members, the great camaderie we enjoy.

About a month after our National Convention last August, we had another round-table meeting with the Secretary of Defense.  We were privileged to receive top-level briefings from several of the Deputy Secretaries and Assistant Deputy Secretaries in the Department of Defense and they fielded every question that the Veterans Service Organization representatives threw at them.  Secretary Hagel spent over an hour with the group and shared a lot of information about his vision of the way forward and his plans and concerns.  He certainly appears to be a man driven to make good things happen in the Department and his chief concern is taking care of the troops.

Universal Headwear - False Rumors Printer friendly page | Send this story to a friend

FROM:  Headquarters Marine Corps, Public Affairs
ISSUE:  Uniform Board #213 (Universal Headwear) Media Reporting

BACKGROUND: DoD (DoN) charged the Corps (and other services) with looking into universal headwear.  Last week, the uniform board sent out a survey, through the chain of command, that sought the opinion of Marines on universal covers, multiple braids for females and Supplemental Allowance Changes.  Someone leaked/provided the survey to the NY post and the post subsequently queried our press section yesterday afternoon on the universal cover.  Upon consulting with the uniform board, we provided the following
answer:
"There is currently an ongoing survey underway asking Marines about their preferences on which type of cover they prefer. The results of the survey will assist the uniform board in making the final decision."  This morning a sensational story tying the decision directly to the POTUS ran in the NY Post (attached).  Other outlets like Fox News and Vanity Fair reported that the Marine Corps is changing the cover and that it may cost $8 million.  I
notified Fox of the facts to correct the record.   On our twitter handles,
we reiterated that the project was in the examination stages and being considered.  Also notified OSD PA of our actions.

DISCUSSION: Media interest in this topic is much higher than anticipated.
Because it involves conflict, prominence, sex, oddity, and suspense - it sells advertising. Many media outlets are simply reporting the NY Post story while others are asking DivPA for additional information. This issue has taken a political tone as the Post reported that President Obama was somehow the root cause of the change. We continue to press with the following statement in subsequent queries:  "The Marine Corps conducts, on average, quarterly assessments of uniform standards and provides their recommendations to the commandant of the Marine Corps for final approval.
The aim of the Marine Corps Uniform Board is to balance the individual Marine's need for 'best value' clothing in terms of practicality, quality and cost within realistic supply, support and fiscal constraints to ensure the Marine Corps maintains functional, traditional and distinctive uniforms.
We are currently assessing the utility of a universal cover that men and women Marines can wear. Personal opinion surveys for active duty and reserve Marines are in progress and we expect a decision to be made next month."

RECOMMENDATION: Aggressively disseminate 3 key facts:

1. The President in no way, shape or form directed the Marine Corps to change our uniform cover.

2. We are looking for a new cover for our female Marines for one overriding reason:  the former manufacturer went out of business.

3. The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover.

Please disseminate information as widely as possible.

On October 23, 1983, terrorists bombed the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 250 service members—220 of them Marines. This event marked one of the deadliest days in the Marine Corps’ long history. In response to this tragedy, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation took swift action, providing 102 treasury note certificates of $10,000 each to the children of all fallen service members that day, no matter their parent’s branch of service. This investment, worth over $1,500,000 today, helped many of them secure a brighter future for their families through education.

As Marine Corps League members, family and friends, come together  to celebrate the 238th Birthday of our beloved Corps. Let’s pause for a moment to reflect back on our history since 1775. Hundreds of thousands of Marines that came before us earned that title and wear the Eagle Globe and Anchor embedded in their heart, from the day they first earned the title of “United States Marine” . Where we have been and what we have done as Marines is evident by The official Battle colors of the Marine Corps that display some fifty streamers .These streamers represent both U.S. and foreign awards as well as those periods of service, expeditions and campaigns that the Marine Corps has participated in from the Revolutionary War to the present.

Six Marine four-star generals confer in the historic "Home of the Commandants" in Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2013.

It is historical that there are six four star Generals in the USMC.  However, that number is dwindling again and may be back to four as of June of this year when General Mattis retires.

According to General James Mattis, “It was a bunch of friends who started out as second lieutenants. We never thought we would end up as four stars. It is the surprise and twists and turns of life.”

Mini-Weapons Add Punch to Small UAVs
A new generation of highly accurate mini-weapons is being developed for small, unmanned aerial vehicles for use against personnel and light vehicles. One factor in development is the need to weaponize small UAVs such as the RQ-7 Shadow from AAI Corp., in use by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, which cannot carry a 100-lb. Hellfire missile.
